12 Volt DC and 120 Volt AC Components and Budget

Understand what belongs in each power path and what a complete installation quote should include.

Many camper-van lights, pumps, fans, and refrigerators are available for DC operation. Household-style outlets in the U.S. commonly supply 120 V AC, sometimes casually called 110 V. Confirm the actual voltage and frequency requirements of every appliance.

A DC-focused system may cover your essential needs without operating an inverter all day. AC adds flexibility for selected household appliances, while introducing conversion losses and additional equipment. Neither category is automatically cheaper once the whole installation is counted.

Prepare a quote checklist:

  • House battery, restraints, and required enclosure or ventilation
  • DC distribution, disconnects, protective devices, cables, and terminations
  • Vehicle charging, solar charging, and/or compatible shore-power charging
  • Inverter or inverter-charger, if needed
  • AC inlet, distribution, transfer arrangements, and appropriate shock protection where applicable
  • Battery monitoring, installation access, labor, and commissioning

Wire and protective-device selection depends on the circuit, installation, equipment instructions, and applicable requirements. Current, route length, temperature, bundling, voltage drop, and fault interruption capability all matter. A fuse is not selected from appliance watts alone. Victron Wiring Unlimited DC wiring.

For budget comparisons, request an essentials-only design and a second quote with your high-draw features. Show the incremental system cost of induction cooking or A/C, including any larger battery and charging equipment they require. Do not compare an installed quote with a box of parts.

Current prices vary by equipment, location, and labor. This guide deliberately gives no universal dollar total. A written scope is more useful than a headline price missing the safety and installation work.
