Collecting and Disposing of Van Gray Water

Plan legal disposal for sink and shower water instead of assuming the ground is an acceptable outlet.

Gray water is the used water from chores such as washing dishes and showering. Give it a dedicated collection system and keep its containers, hoses, and fittings separate from drinking-water equipment.

Start with your route. Identify a facility that accepts the wastewater you will generate, then confirm access, opening times, and instructions. A restroom, roadside drain, or empty patch of ground is not automatically an approved disposal point.

Plan around the waste volume between those stops. Consider what happens if the facility is closed or the container fills earlier than expected. Keep enough capacity or change your washing routine before you have an overflow.

Check the rules for the exact land and campground. Zion's compendium, for example, directs campground gray water to designated disposal areas or appropriate holding and disposal arrangements. Screening out food scraps helps manage the container but does not turn gray water into drinking water or authorize ground disposal. Likewise, biodegradable soap does not grant permission to discharge. Keep wastewater and runoff out of waterways and storm drains; follow any stricter local requirements.

Before packing, practice removing or emptying your container with clean water so you can spot awkward handles and likely spills. Make collection easy enough that it becomes routine.
