Blankets for the unplanned overnight wait
Carry enough dry insulation for the people in the vehicle.
A short afternoon drive can turn into a cold evening when a tire or mechanical problem delays the return. A warm blanket or suitable sleeping bag for each person gives the group options while waiting. Pack for the expected low temperature and a reasonable margin, not just the weather at departure.

Keep insulation dry in a protective bag and reachable without disturbing an unsafe vehicle or unloading the whole cargo area. A compact reflective emergency blanket can be a useful additional layer or wind barrier when used according to its instructions, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a proper sleeping bag in serious cold.
Try your setup at home. Can every passenger get comfortable while wearing the spare clothing carried in the vehicle? Include appropriately sized supplies for children and anyone with particular needs. Wet clothing, a tired group, or several people sharing one small blanket can expose gaps in an otherwise expensive gear collection.
A blanket also has limits. Keep it away from exhausts, hot machinery, and flames. Do not improvise an indoor heater or bring combustion equipment into a vehicle for warmth. Staying warm should not depend on keeping the engine running all night. Air out and fully dry blankets after use, inspect for mildew, and reset the kit after washing. An ordinary dependable blanket is a sensible first purchase.
